This is a senior position for the Systems Engineering team focused on managing our database infrastructure within AWS and all other things related to datastores, such as assisting other teams at Knewton with performance tuning and database design and architecture.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Managing the Cassandra infrastructure at Knewton: scaling up clusters, managing deployments and upgrades, advising other teams on best practices.
  • Managing our RDS infrastructure.
  • Lead database schema reviews with relevant teams.
  • Define best practices for database usage within the organization.
  • Creating tools to help automate and scale our database infrastructure.
  • Monitoring and collection of relevant metrics for databases in our infrastructure.

What we’re looking for:

  • In-depth experience with Cassandra, and MySQL or PostgreSQL.
  • Understanding of configuration management systems (e.g Chef, Puppet, CF Engine)
  • Solid Linux skills.
  • Experience with Java as it relates to Cassandra and the relevant Java APIs (Astyanax, Hector)
  • Practical knowledge of Python and Ruby.
  • Understanding of key value stores such as Memcached, Redis and their relevant AWS implementations.
  • Experience with mentoring other engineers regarding best practices in database schema design.
  • Self-motivating individuals that provide a positive influence to other team members.
